If you are movie buff and like to watch some meaningful cinema then you are in for a treat.
Here are 5 worth watching movies based on real-life events to make your weekend amazing.
Black Friday (2004)
Written and Directed by Anurag Kashyap, the movie is based on 1993 serial Mumbai blasts. It displays the events that led to the bombings, the police investigation leading to tracking down the culprits and how Pakistan played a major role in the terrorist attack. Each scene is so intense and gripping that it does not let you take your eyes off the screen. Anurag Kashyap and the actors have done a phenomenal job, especially Pawan Malhotra as ‘Tiger Memon’. The other notable fact about the movie is that the politicians and gangsters are mentioned by their real names. I would suggest this movie if you want to witness one of the finest works of Anurag Kashyap and some brilliant acting performances.
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Starring Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly, the film is based on the life of a mathematical genius and Nobel Prize laureate, John Forbes Nash, Jr. The film depicts real-life events and how his life comes crashing down as he loses the sense of reality. The genius and engaging direction of Ron Howard plays with the audience’s mind. Russell Crowe’s performance earned him an Oscar Nomination and Jennifer Connelly won an Oscar for the Best Actress in supporting role. The film earned 8 Oscar Nominations and won 4, including Best Picture and Best Director.
The Bank Job (2008)
Starring Jason Statham, the movie is based on the famous Baker Street robbery in London. A drug smuggler involved with Black Revolutionary Movement, Michael X is blackmailing the British government with some controversial photos of members of Parliament. MI5 devises a plan to retrieve these documents from a bank’s safe deposit box. A small-time car dealer Terry Leather in the desperate attempt to clear his debts gets involved after some persuasion by his former lover Martine Love and assembles his crew. The heist takes an unexpected turn as the crew unintentionally steals something more valuable than money and now Terry and his friends are on the run to save their lives. The movie is a well written entertaining crime drama with some exceptional performances.
Based on the real-life events and the hostage crisis during the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979, directed by Ben Affleck himself, the movie is an absolute masterpiece. As the militants take over the US embassy in Tehran, 6 US officials escape to the Canadian embassy and the CIA is ordered to extract them immediately. Using the cover of a sci-fi movie, the CIA with the help of their exfiltration specialist Tony Mendez, rescues the officials from Tehran and brings them back to the US soil. A total of 66 US citizens were seized by the militants during the crisis and 52 of them were held hostage for 444 days. Affleck has done a great job as a director and an actor. The film earned 7 Oscar nominations and won 3, including one for the Best Motion Picture.
Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain (2014)
Picture -Indian Express
The story of India’s own Chernobyl. Based on the Bhopal gas tragedy in 1984, when more than 5 lakh people were exposed to Methyl Isocyanate and killed about 10 thousand people in a single night. The movie honestly depicts the condition of workers and the negligence of the plant officials regarding security and maintenance, leading to mass manslaughter. Being one of the most horrible incidents in the history, Bhopal gas tragedy is still untouched by the Indian film industry. Director Ravi Kumar succeeded in telling this haunting story and the performance of the actors makes it a worth watch.
