There has been a misconception circulating among us for many decades that fat makes you obese.

Therefore you must absolutely do anything to omit it from your diet. While people associate fats and oils with obesity, they most likely forget their benefits and cruciality. Fats are a part of macromolecules which constitute a major part of our diet. Macro-nutrients, in simpler words, are crucial nutrients that can’t be ignored or omitted. They must be consumed in order to sustain life.


Is Fat really the cause of obesity?

The answer is, no. It simply depends on a person’s consumption of it. You can’t expect something to benefit you if you overdose on that. Everything requires a balance, be it fat or any other nutrient. So the question is how much is too much? Well, if you’re an average adult you should cut down fat intake to an extent where you’re not depriving your body of it. Too much fat can, indeed, result in obesity.

But too less of it can change the whole hormonal structure of your body and may damage certain cell cycles. Therefore, I have listed five reasons why fats are important to us.

Imagine if the fat in your body didn’t exist, you probably might freeze to death in winters. The fat in your skin acts as a barrier against heat loss and also serves as a thermal regulator.


Essential fatty acids

There are some essential fatty acids that are not synthesized by our body naturally, they are required to be ingested via foods or supplements. For instance, Omega-3 and Omega-6, powerful anti-oxidants, keep you youthful for a longer period of time, prevent lipid oxidation inside your body keeping you safe from heart diseases, caused by the deposition of excess fat in the arteries.


A Big source of Energy

Unlike other macro-nutrients, fats provide a whopping 9 kcal/gm of energy. It’s relatively quiet high as compared to carbohydrates and proteins. Therefore, they are always recommended to be consumed cautiously so a person may not generate excess fat which can lead to obesity and heart problems.


Is cholesterol also fat?

No, cholesterol is not fat. It’s a waxy compound naturally synthesized by your liver. It is used in the production of some hormones and is mainly not ‘harmful’. Though it is of two types, bad cholesterol (LDL) and good cholesterol (HDL). LDL could be a major problem for the body and can be lowered by consuming unsaturated fats which regulate your cholesterol levels.

Fats play an essential role in hormone production. Hormones are mainly made of lipids a.k.a fats. Therefore a diet low in fats may disrupt their synthesis and can cause major changes in your hormonal cycles. Estrogen and progesterone are essential for controlling mammalian reproduction. The regulation of uterine growth and function is one of these hormones' main functions. If you completely ignore the intake of fats, these hormones may not have enough fat to generate and it can lead to many hormonal disorders in both genders.
