Officials of the Ministry of Environment have been instructed by the Minister to take necessary actions to ban all types of lunch sheets in Sri Lanka.
In Sri Lanka, there is a minimum of over 10 million lunch sheets are disposed to the environment on daily basis. Also, these are non-biodegradable lunch sheets take around 2- 3 years to degrade in the soil.
Scientific evidence has been confirmed that microplastic particles from lunch sheets can remain in the soil for more than 200 years. Therefore Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the respective officials to ban all types of lunch sheets in Sri Lanka.
