Today, technology is everywhere and people can’t imagine life without tech devices. However, it takes a toll on your health, too. Maybe it is time to start a digital detox.

Digital Detox refers to a period of time when a person avoids using tech devices, such as smartphones, computers, and tablets. According to the studies, excessive use of tech devices is related to stress and mental problems. We are all immersed in the digital world and we spend most of our time on tech devices. It is sometimes hard to resist the temptation to check our emails, surf on social media, and text a friend. If we achieve limiting this urge or resisting totally, we will have a healthier lifestyle. One negative consequence of extensive tech use is that you have a fear of missing out, which is also known as FOMO.


It is the fear that you miss every experience everybody is having. People who have this fear always think that they are missing a great post or a message. Another common problem among people who use social media too much is that they always compare themselves to other people on social media. Most people think that their friends or just strangers lead a brilliant and wonderful life but that’s totally wrong. There is even a term that defines this situation: duck syndrome. Ducks seem to be calm and relaxed while swimming. However, in fact they spend too much effort to be able to swim. Detoxing yourself from social media can be a good way to focus on your life without comparing yourself to others. Doing a digital detox will also increase your sleep quality. When you put your phone aside and “declare” a tech-free zone in your room, you will have a better and undisrupted sleep. So, what are other ways of digital detox?


The first thing to do is to turn off all notifications. Staying always ip to date may be informative but it is distracting as well. Another option is ıgnoring your phone during meals. You should only focus on your meal and enjoy it instead of constantly checking your phone. Moreover, I would like to emphasize that you should never underestimate the power of books. Just grab a book or a magazine and read it one hour a day. You will feel the change very soon. Lastly, let’s not forget exercising outside or just walking. Physical exercise is a great step to lead a “digitally detoxified” life.
