‘Flying Sikh’ put to rest by the whole nation: India

India bid farewell to the country’s greatest track and field athlete with State honours on the evening of 19th June. Padma Shri Milkha Singh passed away on Friday, due to COVID and he was laid to rest in Chandigarh, Punjab. He lost his wife, Nirmal Kaur five days prior to his death and he was cremated in the same place.

A day of mourning was announced by the Punjab government in his honour. He is survived by three daughters and a son.

The 91-year old tested positive for COVID-19 on May 20 after which he was immediately hospitalised. Following the discharge on May 30, he was readmitted on June 3rd due to low oxygen levels. However, his condition worsened later on Friday, even after testing negative, succumbing to death.

“We have lost a colossal sportsperson, who captured the nation’s imagination and had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians”, stated Narendra Modi.

The President and Vice President of India along with other famous personalities offered tribute to the 1958 Commonwealth Games champion and 1960 Rome Olympian.
