Serena Williams said, I never wanted to have to decide between having a family and playing tennis. It doesn't seem fair to me.

If I were a guy, my wife would be performing the physical labour of growing our family while I would be out there playing and winning. Maybe if I had that chance, I'd be more like Tom Brady. Please understand that I adore being a woman, and I adored every second of carrying Olympia. (her daughter). Even if things got quite tough on the other side, I was one of those annoying ladies who loved being pregnant and worked up until the day I had to go to the hospital. And a lot of people don't realize that I nearly pulled off the seemingly impossible.

Retirement is a word I have never liked. To me, the word doesn't seem contemporary. Although I've been thinking of this as a transition, I want to be careful how I use that word because it has very distinct and significant meanings to different communities of people. Evolution might be the greatest way, to sum up, what I'm doing. I'm here to let you know that my priorities are shifting away from tennis and toward other activities that are equally important to me. Serena Ventures is a venture capital firm that I secretly founded a few years ago. I had my first child not long after that. It's my goal to expand that family.

However, I have been hesitant to tell anyone—including myself—that I need to stop playing tennis. It's almost like it's a forbidden subject; Alexis, my husband, and I have barely discussed it. Even with my parents, I am unable to have this discussion, unless you speak it aloud, it's not real. I feel a strange lump in my throat, and then I begin to cry as it comes up.

I've only truly travelled there with my therapist. I won't sugarcoat anything, that's for sure. I am aware that many individuals are eager to retire, and I sincerely wish I shared their enthusiasm. Serena, not only moved from a young girl braided with beads to a winning woman adorned with diamonds. Though she never liked the idea of retirement, time has made it a necessity. She is soon finding a new life off the courts. But she has written her name in gold. The heart is glad when dreams are fulfilled.
