Indian Variant of Covid 19 Detected for the First Time in Sri Lanka!

Sri Lanka today confirmed that the highly contagious Delta Variant of Covid 19, which was first identified in India, has been detected from community samples obtained in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

This was revealed by Dr Chandima Jeewandara, director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the University of Sri Jayawardhanapura.

He stated that SARS-COV-2 Delta Variant, also known as Lineage B.1.617.2 has been detected from 5 samples obtained from Colombo and he also said that this is the first time that the Indian variant detected from Sri Lanka.

The Delta Variant had a speedy growth dominant strain in the United Kingdom.
