#SaveLakshadweep has been trending all over the internet for the past month across India and let us look into the reason behind recent distress calls from the inhabitants of the land.
Lakshadweep is India’s smallest union territory consisting of 36 scattered islands covering an area of 32 square kilometers, next to the coastal area of Kerala. This beautiful land is filled with indigenous flora and fauna highly respected by the local people and had been living in perfect harmony until the new administrator was appointed by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.
BJP politician, Praful Khoda Patel has destroyed the peace and tranquility of the population by imposing unjust amendments of laws disregarding the practicality behind the previous legislation. Usually, union territories are governed by bureaucrats namely IAS or IPS officers but this history changed with the arrival of Mr. Patel.
In the name of development, he took away the little democracy that existed on the island. Patel introduced the anti-social Activities Regulation bill 2021 or the Goonda Act in a land where crime rates are reportedly the lowest compared to the entire country. This reform allows the police to act as the judiciary to punish individuals without a public trial.
The people are highly distressed by the baseless actions of the authorities in power and it questions the need for these reforms. The government also took over the power of the elected local administration that was responsible for education, health care, agriculture, animal husbandry, and fisheries. Apart from this, the draft panchayat regulations were passed restricting individuals with more than two children to contest panchayat elections, causing unrest within the community.
The regulation also allows the government to take over any part of the land in the name of ‘development’. This could be extreme as it could lead to the eviction of the islanders from their home ground. It is important to note that the so-called ‘government’ is Praful Patel himself who has caused trouble to this peaceful biodiversity.
The situation could not get any worse with the introduction of Animal regulation which banned the consumption and handling of beef in a Muslim-majority population. This marks the complete destruction of culture on baseless grounds without the permission of the general public living in Lakshadweep.
Politicians and famous Mollywood celebrities have voiced their disagreement with the actions taken by the administrator of Lakshadweep through various social media platforms. The people of Lakshadweep want Administrator Praful Patel to resign and they continue their strikes day and night with chants and slogans like ‘Go back’ against the government.
This is probably the first time after independence the name of Lakshadweep has reached national television. This clearly explains the fatality of the situation. Lakshadweep desperately needs help and it is quite disappointing to say that the government has failed the people once again. Has the world’s largest democracy started to crash with the arrival of the Bharatiya Janata Party?
