Living in a career Bondage!

Nigeria | Bondage | Life | 11th August 2021 | Virtual Wire

A lady of about fifty years old, made up her mind today while discussing with a junior colleague, that she was finally going to pursue her passion.

She's currently an owner of a pharmacy that is stable and running smoothly, but for these past years, being a Pharmacist was never the career she wanted. She remained in it though, suffering in silence, because that was what was expected of her. This is not a fate that only she suffers.

In our Nigerian society today, there are a lot of people in career bondages. Meaning where they are, is not where they want to be, and it seems as if there is nothing that they can do about it.

Society tells them that what they desire isn't good enough. There is pressure on them to continue the 'status quo, even if they do not know the origin of it.

It is like an unending cycle. One generation after the other, with people in jobs/careers, that they do not have passion for, and the problem is not that they don't know as much as them being unable to free themselves from this bondage.

There is the question of; what would people say? And how would I cope with abandoning the life I've always known? These questions are embedded in the ultimate -THE FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN.

Despite these obvious reasons, nothing will ever be a good enough reason to live in regret for the few years we have as humans, thinking about what our lives would have been like, and what happiness we are missing, because we never believed our passions/dreams could give us a fulfilling career path.
