Major Changes in Harry Potter Movies!

Movies | Hollywood | Harry Potter | Changes | 25th July 2022 | Virtual Wire

The Harry Potter series is one of the most beloved and evergreen franchises all over the world.

The movie adaptation is just as popular as the books if not more. What all movie adaptations have in common are the changes to the story to make it suit the form of content. Often, they are disappointing to those who have read the book, the changes may be appreciated but rarely. In this series, some Potterheads find many changes to be very striking at first glance. The Harry Potter series has the entire main storyline already adapted into the story along with a few other side stories such as The Fantastic Beasts and where to find them. This article will take you through some of the major changes the movies have made. Before going further please keep in mind that there will be examples from all 7 main movies. If you haven’t read or seen them, read at your own discretion.

Dumbledore’s reaction to the Goblet of Fire

This is one of the most infamous movie changes talked about. Even those who haven’t read the book probably know about this scene. Book readers were left shocked looking at Albus Dumbledore’s aggressive reaction to Harry’s name coming out of the Goblet of fire, thus making him the 4th participant of the Triwizard Tournament and binding him to the game without an option to leave. Even those who have only seen the movies and are well versed with Dumbledore’s personality were left in shock. It was completely out of place and left a sour taste on many fans. Dumbledore throughout the movie scene was in an obvious rage, shouting at Harry rushing at him in the Champion’s room and interrogating Harry while grabbing him by his shoulders. While in the book Dumbledore was the exact opposite that is the character being himself. Calm and composed Dumbledore handled the situation as any brilliant leader figure would have. Although shocked on the inside he kept a poker face to calm the situation without giving any hints of what he felt or thought.

Absence of Peeves the Poltergeist

The notorious peeves were among the first characters introduced to us within the Hogwarts castle. This annoying poltergeist who is an outcast amongst the castle ghost is nothing but a menace to everyone within the castle bar one. The only one who has any measure of control is the Slytherin house ghost the Bloody Baron. The baron not only scares Peeves but can also discipline him to a degree even Dumbledore may not. Each time he appears he causes havoc and at times may bring some comedic relief in tense situations. A prime example is his little song after Voldemort’s death. The song is “We did it, we bashed them, we Potter’s the one, And Voldy’s got mouldy, so now let’s have fun!”

Breaking of the Elder Wand

The movie depicts only one of the Deadly Hallow'sendings true endings. That is the resurrection stone which Harry drops at a random spot in the Forbidden Forest. The cloak of invisibility is not shown which is fine as Harry kept it with himself and only in another story ‘The Cursed Child’ did we learn he gave it to his son. Whereas it’s shown in the movie that Harry breaks the Elder wand as he considers it to be too much trouble. This is not at all true as Harry actually uses it to fix his broken wand and then talks to Dumbledore’s portrait in the Headmaster's office and tells him that he will put it back in his grave and hopefully when he dies a natural death it’s power will go with him. We don’t know whether it means the Elder wand is no longer usable or if nobody else will be able to be its true master. What we do know is the Elder wand was never broken and it’s within Dumbledore’s grave.

Harry and Cho’s Chemistry

In the 5th story The Order of Phoenix we were introduced to a sudden relationship between Harry and Cho Chang the Ravenclaw Seeker. We learn both are interested in each other after only a few meetings that mainly occurred in the Goblet of Fire. They finally manage to come out of their shy shell and spend more time together. Interestingly something common that held both of them back and at the same time got them close to seek each other’s comfort was Cedric Diggory’s death. Cho had fallen for Cedric after she became his partner at the Yule Ball. Later she also began to be interested in Harry she began to have mixed feelings. She likes Harry but at the same time, she can’t get rid of the thought that Harry was with Cedric when the latter died. This is something very important between the two which the movie barely touches upon. In the book, Harry and Cho even go out on a date during a trip to Hogsmeade. The date snowballed into a disaster.

Cho at times wanted to discuss Cedric’s death but Harry was reluctant to even bring up the topic. Harry also had to go visit Hermione soon as they had discussed ‘Dumbledore’s Army’(DA). Harry asked Cho to join them in between the date and she began feeling a bit jealous as Hermione could hold Harry’s attention. Cho then brought up the fact that Roger Davies had asked her out to see how much Harry valued her. Harry does not understand any of this hidden intent. A Big argument followed which got the attention of those around them and Cho stormed off leaving Harry sitting alone. Later during DA and after Cho read an interview of Harry, things mended slightly but only just.

The final nail in the coffin came when Cho’s friend Marietta Edgecombe snitched about DA to Umbridge. The DA had to be disbanded at the time and be victim to Umbridge’s punishment. Cho took the side of her friend while Harry opposed. After this, the two completely fell off for well and good. None of this was depicted in the movie and Marietta wasn’t even cast. In fact, it was shown the DA was found out due to Cho being caught and leading them to the room of requirements. This was probably done to reduce the length of the movie while not taking focus away from the more important events in the story.

The House of Gaunt

The movies have opted out of several characters 2 of who are already covered in this article. Although impactful in their own ways the two don’t even come near the Gaunt Family in terms of impact, wizarding history and importance. Who are the Gaunt family? They are none other than the true heir of Salazar Slytherin. It’s mentioned how Voldemort’s real name Tom Marvolo Riddle came from his father Tom Riddle Sr. His mother’s name was omitted from the movies. Voldemort’s mom was Merope Gaunt. The Gaunts had a tradition of marrying from their own family. Several cousins married within the family. This was done to retain the powers of parseltongue that originated from Salazar Slytherin their ancestor. They are also the descendants of the 2nd Peverell brother Cadmus Peverell who was the original owner of the resurrection stone. Before his suicide, Cadmus had an heir to whom he passed down a ring.

This ring would be passed down to each generation until one day it fell into Voldemort’s hands. This is the same ring that held the resurrection stone in it, became a Horcrux and poisoned Albus Dumbledore. These are a few major events that can be traced back to the Gaunt family. They are also a pathway to a very distant blood connection between Voldemort and Harry. As mentioned, Voldemort is a descendant of Cadmus Peverell, while Harry is a descendant of Ignotus Peverell. Ignotus is the 3rd Peverell brother who owned the Cloak of invisibility and his granddaughter was the first to be married to the Potter family, her name was Iolanthe Potter Peverell.

Gaunt family’s influence is still not done. Another member of the family Corvinus Gaunt is the one who protected the Chamber of Secrets from coming into light sometime during the 1700sthe. There were plans on installing a newer plumbing system which would have led Hogwarts to discover the Chamber. Corvinus managed to conceal the entrance into the girl's washroom pipes that we know of today. Few may have even heard of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The American school of wizardry was set up by founder Isolt Sayre. Isolt Sayre is also another member of the house of Gaunt. She also happens to be the only member to marry a muggle.

Her mother Rionach Gaunt was from the direct bloodline. Reach and her husband was murdered by Rionach’s sister Gormlaith for what she considered tainting the family honour. Reach and her husband had saved some of their muggle neighbours by making magical cures for them. This made them suffer Gormlaith’s wrath who then saved 5-year-old Isolt from the house fire and kept her imprisoned in hopes that she would marry pure blood. Isolt manages to escape from her Aunt and travel to America where she would meet her future husband James Steward together with him would set up Ilvermorny.
