Food scientists, nowadays are trying to make our diet more nutritious and healthy. They are trying to find alternative sources for better food products.
Recently, a rise in the consumption of vegan products has been observed. People are avoiding dairy and animal-based foods and replacing their menu with vegan products. In this article we would be discussing why vegan products are so high in demand and why are they a better option?
What are vegan products?
Vegan products are those food commodities that are wholly plant-based. They have little to no animal sources involved. For example Nondairy milk and yoghurt, legumes, lentils, fermented plant-based foods, and other plant-based products.
Why are vegan products so high in demand?
Veganism has led to a worldwide change in diet plans. Approximately 0.1% of the total world population is vegan which means 78 Billion people are vegans. This increase in the vegan population led to high demand for vegan products. Even nonvegans are now shifting to a more vegan-based diet due to its benefits.
Why are vegan products a better option?
People have been debating the benefits of a vegan-based diet. Vegan products are rich in many nutrients that are beneficial for us. For example, proteins which are the building blocks of muscles and needed in high amounts for our body to survive are present in sufficient quantities in lentils. A ½ cup serving of lentils provides 26 grams of proteins which is sufficient for us. Another vital nutrient is Iron which is responsible for the formation of haemoglobin. It is present in leafy vegetables, lentils, chickpeas, cashew nuts, chia seeds, fortified breakfast cereals etc.
Other micronutrients like vitamins and minerals are also present in many foods like leafy vegetables, tofu, fortified unsweetened soya, sesame seeds etc. Foods like butternut squash, broccoli, spinach etc. are rich in Vitamin A. Nuts like almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, walnuts, and pistachios are rich in Vitamin B. Citrus fruits and leafy vegetables like spinach are rich in Vitamin C. Spinach are also rich in Vitamin D, calcium and magnesium. Cooked spinach also contains potassium. Broccoli is also rich in Vitamin E. Leafy vegetables are also a good source of Vitamin K. Bananas are the best source of potassium which helps in muscle movement.
Should we shift to a vegan diet?
Veganism is prevailing throughout the world. People are gradually realizing its health benefits. But to shift your diet to a vegan diet entirely depends on your choice. Vegan products are generally quite expensive and are sometimes unavailable in many underdeveloped countries. Therefore, people can't afford them and have to stick to their regular diets. Another reason is that a vegan diet is low in fats which are essential for keeping our bodies warm. Therefore, people who live in colder areas rely on animal-based products since they need a high amount of fats. But it has loads of benefits, which can't be overlooked and therefore, a better option for sustaining the food chain and avoiding animal abuse.
