Food Safety | 7th June 2021 | Virtual Wire
In 2018, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed that every year June 7th would be observed as World Food Safety Day.
According to the UN, around 420,000 adults and 125,000 children under the age of 5 years across the globe die every year after eating contaminated food.
Food safety is the absence – of safe, acceptable levels – of hazards in food that may harm the health of consumers.
Food safety has a critical role in ensuring that food stays safe at every stage of the food chain – from production to harvest, processing, storage, distribution, all the way to preparation and consumption.
The objective of celebrating the day is to focus on food security and highlight different areas relating to human health, economic prosperity agriculture, market access, and tourism, and sustainable development, according to the World Health Organization.
Through World Food Safety Day, WHO works to mainstream food safety in the public agenda and reduce the burden of food-borne diseases globally." Food safety is everyone's business," according to the public health agency.
This international day is an opportunity to strengthen efforts to ensure that the food we eat is safe, mainstream food safety in the public agenda, and reduce the burden of foodborne diseases globally.
